WEEKLY REFLECTION ON 2026 DIOCESAN THEME: "IMMANUEL: GOD IS WITH US" (Matthew 1:23; Deuteronomy 31:8; Psalm 23:4)

SUB-THEME: THE GOD WHO COMES NEAR

TOPIC: When Heaven Touched Earth

TEXTS: Luke 2:10–11; Philippians 2:6–8

Introduction:

"When heaven touched earth" is a figurative expression describing the incarnation of Jesus Christ. St Luke describes the atmosphere of His birth: "But the angel said to [the shepherds], 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.'"

The arrival of Jesus was heralded by an angelic announcement, declaring Him the Saviour of the world. When He touched down, there was great joy. The angel proclaimed: "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people" (Luke 2:10). His birth inspired praise and celebration, and it established divine peace: "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased'" (verses 13–14). He came to transform the world for good.

While on earth, He lived an exemplary life of humility. Philippians 2:6–8 says:

"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!" Jesus Christ is humility personified.

In summary, Jesus Christ touched down on earth to:

* Take away our sins;

* Cast away our fears;

* Give us hope;

* Save us unto eternal life;

* Set an example for us to follow.

If we follow His example, we will never go astray, and we will enter His kingdom at last.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Son, Jesus Christ, to meet our needs. Help me to live His exemplary life and make it to Your Kingdom at last. In Jesus' name, Amen.
