SUBTHEME: WHERE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
TOPIC: Making a Difference in My Appearance as a Christian
TEXT: 1 Timothy 2:9 – “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes.”
Introduction: As Christians, we are called to live differently from the world around us. This includes how we speak, act, and even how we dress. The Bible gives us wisdom about how we should present ourselves outwardly. In 1 Timothy 2:9, Apostle Paul encourages Christian women to dress modestly, with decency and self-control. Although he speaks directly to women, the principle also applies to men. Our dress should reflect our faith and bring glory to God.
The way we dress says something about what we believe. When we wear clothes that are too revealing, too flashy, or meant only to draw attention to ourselves, we may send the wrong message. God wants His children to be known not just by their words, but by how they live, including how they dress.
Modesty is not about looking dull or unattractive. It is about showing respect to God, ourselves, and others. Modest clothing is neat, clean, and appropriate for the situation. It does not bring shame or cause others to stumble.
As Christians, we should aim to dress in a way that shows we belong to Jesus. This means choosing clothes that reflect godliness, humility, and purity. Our goal should not be to impress people with expensive or seductive fashion but to please God and reflect His light.
Closely linked to the clothes we wear are our hairstyles.
Hairstyles such as dreadlocks or bushy and unkempt hair may send negative signals, as they are often associated with rebellion or non-conformity, particularly among the youth. A clean and modest appearance is often closely tied to spiritual discipline.
Before getting dressed each day, ask yourself:
a. Does this outfit or my appearance honour God?
b. Would I be comfortable wearing this in church or before Jesus Himself?
c. Does this show love and respect for others?
Prayer: Dear Lord,
Thank You for making me Your child. Help me to honour You in every part of my life, including the way I dress. Teach me to be modest, humble, and wise in my clothing choices. Let my appearance reflect Your love and grace. Use me to be a good example to others.
In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
