WEEKLY REFLECTION ON 2026 DIOCESAN THEME: "IMMANUEL: GOD IS WITH US" (Matthew 1:23; Deuteronomy 31:8; Psalm 23:4)
SUB-THEME: THE GOD WHO COMES NEAR
TOPIC: From Promise to Presence
TEXTS: Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6
A father teaching his child to swim does not shout instructions from the shore; he steps into the water. The presence of that father calms fear more than their words ever can. The child’s confidence grows, not merely because of a promise of safety, but his father is there.
So it is with the Lord. In the book of Isaiah 7:14, God gives a sign—Immanuel, “God with us.” In the Book of Isaiah 9:6, the promised child is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace. What began as a spoken assurance became a living reality. The God who declared His faithfulness did not remain distant; He stepped into the waters of our human condition.
We need to recognise that God’s nearness is personal and transformative. From promise to presence, He walks beside us in uncertainty, strengthens us in weakness, and fills us with peace. We are not left to struggle alone; Immanuel stands with us.
Prayer:
Faithful God, thank You for drawing near to me. Help me to trust not only in Your promises but in Your abiding presence. May I live each day confident that You are with me, guiding and sustaining me. Amen.
