SUBTHEME: CHANGING THE NARRATIVE
TOPIC: Say No to Bribery
TEXT:
“Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent.” — Exodus 23:8 (NIV)
In a society where corruption has almost become a cultural norm—particularly in public service, politics, and, regrettably, even in some religious spaces—the call to change the narrative is both timely and urgent. To “say no to bribery” is not merely a moral slogan; it is a spiritual imperative rooted in God’s justice and righteousness.
Bribery undermines justice. It distorts truth, oppresses the innocent, and erodes the fabric of trust in any society. In Exodus 23:8, God gives a direct command: “Do not accept a bribe.” The reason is clear—bribery blinds those who see. It dulls discernment, corrupts decision-making, and betrays the conscience.
Changing the narrative means refusing to participate in, or benefit from, a corrupt system. It means living counter-culturally in a generation where many believe that “everyone has a price.” As Christians, we are called to be light in the darkness (Matthew 5:14–16) and salt in a decaying world. We must uphold integrity, even when it is costly.
The Bible is filled with stories that illustrate the devastating effects of bribery:
Samuel’s sons took bribes and perverted justice (1 Samuel 8:3).
Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for a bribe of thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14–16).
In our context as Nigerians—and especially within the Church community—saying no to bribery must begin with:
1. Personal integrity – refusing to give or take bribes.
2. Bold teaching – preaching righteousness without fear or favour.
3. Raising the next generation – disciplining children and youth to value honesty over gain.
4. Accountability – holding leaders and members accountable to godly standards.
5. Institutional reform – building systems that discourage bribery and reward transparency.
We must remember: God sees. No bribe is hidden from His sight. He calls His people to uphold justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8).
To say no to bribery is to align with God’s heart. It is to be a prophetic voice in a crooked generation. It is to change the narrative—not merely in words, but in deeds. It may not be easy, but it is worth it. Let the Church lead the way.
Prayer: Lord God, Give us the courage to say no to bribery and to stand for truth and justice in all we do. Strengthen our hearts to live with integrity, even when it costs us. Let Your Church lead by example and shine as a light in the darkness.
