DIOCESE OF EVO WEEKLY REFLECTION ON 2026 DIOCESAN THEME: “IMMANUEL: GOD IS WITH US”(Matthew 1:23; Deuteronomy 31:8; Psalm 23:4)
INTRODUCTORY REFLECTION (1)
TOPIC: Immanuel — God is With Us
TEXT: Matthew 1:23 - “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Immanuel and Emmanuel mean the same thing: “God is with us.” The difference is mainly spelling and usage, not meaning.
* Immanuel comes directly from the Hebrew word ʿImmānûʾēl. It is used in the Old Testament (e.g., Isaiah 7:14)
* Emmanuel comes through the Greek and Latin forms used in the New Testament and common in English translations and hymns.
The name Immanuel reveals a beautiful and comforting truth: God chooses to be with His people. From the earliest promises in Scripture, God has not left His people alone. In the birth of Jesus, this promise becomes real in a personal and tangible way. God comes near, not as a distant observer, but as One who shares our humanity and walks with us in every circumstance.
Matthew 1:23 calls our attention to the meaning of the name Immanuel: “God is with us.” The text shows that God’s presence is not temporary or symbolic—it is living and immediate. In Jesus, God enters our world, our struggles, our joys, and our daily life. The prophecy reassures us that God’s presence is faithful, transformative, and available to all who welcome Him. It is a reminder that we are never alone, for the Creator of heaven and earth is walking beside us.
As we begin this season of reflection, we simply receive this promise. God is here, now, among us, and within us.
Prayer: Lord God, I thank You for sending Jesus, Your presence among us. Help me to recognize Your nearness in my life each day. Open my heart to welcome You fully, strengthen my trust in Your guidance, and lead me to walk with courage and hope. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
